Jonas Brothers It's About Time - CD Review
I took a trip to the yeah 3000.
This song had gone multi-platinum.
Everybody brought our 7th album.
It had outsold Kelly Clarkson.
As a parent and a Christian music journalist, I really have to ask myself why it is that three preacher's kids who are being marketed to the Christian market aren't saying anything that goes deeper than their own popularity?!?
Trying to reach a mainstream audience is great - unless you water down your own message so much to "fit in" that it is no longer a message at all.

kay this song was a REMAKE of an 80’s song Year 300 by the British bnd Busted. be thankful that your daughter’s are singing “girls there with round hair like star wars they float above the floor” instead of “triple-breasted women swimming downtown totally naked” the Jonas Brothers have much deeper music than Year 3000 and What i Go To School For. Such as “Hey We’re Gonna Be Alright” where they sing about people who are down on their luck, such as homeless people, and saying that you should make the best out of any situation.sadly enough they took that song off of their debut album and replaced it with such Year 3000 nd What I Go To School For. but those songs are still fun, and are better for your daughters to listen to than Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Chamillionaire, and Kelis.
I totally agree with Maddie. I mean, just because you don’t like one song of the Jonas Brothers doesn’t mean anything. Their songs are really close to the heart, and they personally inspire me. So, you definetly need to listen to the other songs.
Hey, I have to say that the christian music has gone so much commercial that it is no longer music at all. I adore some of the songs and they touch my heart but sometimes artists forget who they are and what is their mission. And believe me it is much more than just entertainment. Jonas bros could have made another cover of another song. Singing about you is just something I would tune my radio away from…
i agree. be thankful your kids are listening to that and not music about sex and being sexy and etc. jonas brothers are a great band and they work very hard. theyre wonderful boys and they have fun when they sing. have a little respect.
Are you freakin’ kidding me? This is supposed to be a Christian band, but their lyrics aren’t very Christian. Look at the song “What I Go To School For”.
“Her boyfriend’s just turning nineteen But that doesn’t bother me He’s back at college out of town I find
a reason to go round
I climb a tree outside her home To make sure she is alone She looks up and sees me there Still I cant
help but stop and stare
That’s what I go to school for Even though it is a real bore You can call me crazy She is so amazing
That’s what I go to school for Even though it is a real bore Girlfriends I’ve had plenty But she’s the
one that I need That’s what I go to school for That’s what I go to school for
Everyone that you see all day knows you’re looking at me in a different way I guess that’s why my marks
are getting so high I can see those tell tale signs telling me that I was on your mind I could see that
you want it more when you told me that I’m what you go to school for I’m what you go to school for”
Let’s see, they show kids that going after someone who is already “taken” is OK. (Doesn’t the Bible talk about problems God has with people coveting what isn’t theirs?)
They make being a peeping tom/stalker acceptable (I climb a tree outside her home To make sure she is alone). Is that really a value we want kids to think is a good one?
They come right out and say that the only thing school is good for is finding a girlfriend. What kind of message is that sending to the youth? And more importantly, what kind of message is that sending to the young girls, maybe your own daughter? It sounds like they’re saying that education is secondary to being in a meat market! That point is brought in with the chorus. It’s highlighted again with the lines “I could see that you want it more when you told me that I’m what you go to school for”. At least they’re equal opportunity there, basically saying that school is useless for males or females because it’s all about finding girlfriends/boyfriends and social opportunities instead of actually learning something!
You said that Kim Jones should show some respect. I say that you should grow up and show some maturity, pulling your head out of your rear and really looking at what it is that these artists are saying and who they’re really representing.
I say lighten up a bit. These artists are deeply committed to providing an upbeat & positive influence to the youth of today. They are not trying to say that going to school is all about getting a girlfriend/boyfriend. What teenager doesn’t develop a crush on a particular person? It’s all in good fun and it’s much better music for kids to listen to than most of what is being played on the radio today. Read a little more about the Jonas Brothers and you will find 3 boys who have been raised to have great faith and to use their God given talents to a greater cause. They are truly great Christian Boys and are striving to be more than just another teen band trying to get in on a little fame. In my opinion, by getting the interest of some non believers through their music, they have the opportunity to spread the message to far more people than if they were always entertaining people who already believed.
Um first of all…they are not a christian band. Allthough Nick was a christian solo singer and the Jonas Brothers have recorded a few christian related songs…that does NOT make them a christian band. So before you go ridiculing them, keep that in mind because there music is more than just god. And also… their lyrics are actually deep. Maybe if you all listened to all of their songs, you’d figure that out. I’m not hear to argue with anyone…but jsut DONT judge a band you dont know.
Well I for one am a huge Jonas Brothers fan, but I understand you are entittled to your own oppinion. But if you are looking at them for their catholic sense then you should not be reviewing What I go to school for and Year 3000. They have songs entittled “Hey Were Gunna Be Alright” and “Time for me to fly.” Which are cretainly insperatrational and well writen. Yes their father is a pastor but that does not mean they have to have all catholic music. They are teenage boys for goodness sake! How do you except them to not write songs about girls and other things. And another thing, all of their songs that aren’t religous never have anything innapropriate in the least in them. All of their music is suitable for even a 5 year old. Also the fact that some of their music is about girls, dating etc. makes them seem way more realistic. Tell me if you would believe entirely religous songs is completly heartfelt from a 17,19 and 14 year old teenager. Also their non- religous songs are meanigngful too. Take One Day At Time “I’d climb a moutain just to hear your echo.” This lyric is creative and meanigngfull at least to me. Which brings me to my next point, I enjoy their music, my friends enhjoy their music, kids, middle school and high school students enjoy their music. Their music is directed to the kid-teen audiance not yours. Do you really think a band of teenages is trying to attarct adult fans? The music they write can be related and enjoyed by their fans at their target age group.
And one more thing, do you actually except they would be complety succesful with all reliougus songs? Really, how many teens do you think would be intrested in an all reliougus group? I’m not saying I have a problen with reliogus music, I think its a good thing but I don’t think the Jonas Brothers or any other teen group needs to have entirely reliogus music.
By the way I agree with Maddie,Hayley,Alexa,Brian, Joy and Melanie.
Whoops but I didnt mean to put Brian. I’m sorry but I don’t agree with him.
First of all I’d like to comment that the Jonas Brothers aren’t catholic Kari. They are Chrisitians and I should know most of all since they are like, all I listen to. I am twelve years old and I don’t get any bad messages form their songs and neither do any of my friends. They come from a good Chrisitian home and so do I. My parents are fine with their music and everyone else should be too.
Okay I’d like to say that these kids are 14 16 17 what do you expect them to sing about…Yes there are “what I go to school for” and “Year 3000″ but hey those are fun songs and they dont have any inapropriot lyrics…So what if they aren’t very deep. Also I’d like to say that those two songs aren’t ones they’ve written where as “Time for me to fly” and several others with a good message are. So they sing about haveing a crush. Big freakin’ whoop. They are teenage boys. My own mother raises me as a christian and I listen to non-Christian bands all the time.
And another thing if you have the cd and read the special thanx then they imediatly thank God for all he’s given them. I think they’re very thankful for all that he has really given them. They’re a nice group of boys who wre brought up right. Lighten up! You really shouldn’t stereotype them with all those other bands such as bowling4Soup or Britney Spears. You should put them with the other groups such as third day or Pillar!!!
Oh I would like to add something. I’ve read several other articles on the same subject (I’m very interested in this band) and there are other things. Such as an interview that christian music planet had with them. It says right there that even songs about girls and other issues are from a faith baised perspective. Honestly I think if a record company or whatever asked them to do some chingy song about sex and drugs I dont think they’d take it. Really listen to the music. Do they really seem like those typical teens that only want to sing for fame money and girls? NO! In that interview I said about b4 there father a minister says that the boys have reached more people through myspace and TRL than he has in his whole career as a preacher. Does that tell you anything? Hmmmmmm???
Well I am almost 13 and I think the jonas brothers are perfect role models. I know that might not sound like alot coming from a kid but these boys have been raised in a wonderful christian home. I should know I have been researching them for the past week non stop my bff is getting really annoyed. I know that their songs aren’t all christians but they are teens and are signed with disney recordeds. My mom has been begging me to stop listening to the radio for about a yr and said even if she told me not to listen to it I still would wich is most likly true. But anyways with my new i pod and the help of a church retreat, relient k and the jonas bros I have pretty much stoped cold turkey
yeah that is so true! The jonas brothers are suppose to leave a good example to the youth and not those ridiculous lyrics!
Okay, first off I would like to point out I’m 15-years-old and can relate to mostly all of their lyrics. They are great Christain role models. They don’t party all night long, like Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake. They have a consent reminder to remain pure until marriage on their left ring finger. When looking for a girl, they look for “a big heart” and “strong belief system”.
About their lyrics, sure they’ve had songs like “What I Go To School For”. This was another song they re-did (it was originally done by Busted). Again, be thankful your kids aren’t listening to a freshman crushing on a teacher, where eventually the teacher crushes back. Eww, creppy! One song I like by them is called “Underdog”.
Everyone sees her
But nobody knows her
She screams in her pillow
For a better tomorrow
She hates it but she takes
Watch out for the girl
One day she may change the world
Maybe she’ll be in a movie
Maybe she’ll be in a song
Better pay her some attention
Before she’s gone
She’s an underdog
Yeah
She means the world to me
Yeah
I mean, this song helped me through my transition from middle school to high school. So did their new song “Hold On”
One single smile a helping hand
It’s not that hard to be a friend
So don’t give up, stand till the end
Cause there’s more to life than just to live
Cause an empty room can be so loud
It’s too many tears to drown them out
So Hold on (hold on) Hold on (hold on)
When you love someone and they break your heart
Don’t give up on love
Have FAITH restart
Just hold on (hold on) hold on (hold on)
When it falls apart and your feeling lost
All your hope is gone, don’t forget to
Hold on, hold on
So I think the Jo Bros have lyrics that teens can relate to. Plus, their first album is not to be judged as “bubblegum pop and punk/rock”. They were trying to find their stride. Plus, it’s kinda hard to sound punk/rock when your voice hasn’t matured yet (speaking about Nick) So LISTEN TO THEIR SONGS!!! You may find you could relate to them…at any age.
Also, (in reponse to Anonomous 2) they wouldn’t do a song about sex or drugs because they write all of their songs and base them on something that happened to them.
*Note-Ths is agreeing with Anonomous 2*
u have got to freaking kidding me!!!!! these boys have wonderful talent and they r not a christian band even though nick has sang and WAS a solo chrsitian singer. they r a group and there is now clashing maybe ur hears have gone wacko cause u need a hearing aid…there not sayin anything wrong there songs r very inspirational to me and too manny young and teenage girls u in some songs they say the truth and u just want to sugar coat it and try to m ake out the world is a good place these boys r sayin real things u need to take another listen and stop judging there music…BOOYAHHH!!!!!
umm i love the jonas brothers and there the reason i became a christian in the first place before the jonas brothers i was bad and the kind of music i listened to was horrible all it was, was sex drugs and other things..and you dont know what your talking about so before you say stuff get your facts straight….
hey this is amanda
oky so listen here i dont really think that god wants you off judging people because theyre not like you..
plus you dont freakin no them..they are ahmazing christian people that have hearts to change this world and im guessing youve only heard that one song or Y0U would freakin know what im talking about..um listen to dear god maybe it will teach you a lil sumthin..
and yea like everyone has been saying at least were all not listening to bad music and yea they changed my life to im not just saying that they really did..
EDITED BY GUIDE TO ADD … The song “Dear God” is not on this CD. It was a song recorded by Nicholas prior to “It’s About Time” being released and was not included on the CD.
seriously… they are not cussing or demoting God in any of their songs! why focus on a few songs. if ppl in the world know they are christians and see that they arent sending a bad image to everyone i dont understand why you’d complain that they are singing about their success–even tho it is just a song! called year 3000! why would u take a song about going to the YEAR 3000 seriously???
and before you start complaining about 3 teenage boys singing a harmless song, ask yourself what you are doing to help every1 in the world and show a christian life to those who are NOT christians! the jonas brothers are a great example that being a christian doesnt mean u just sit back and let every1 else in the world live their lives. that you can be successful and believe in God also.
the jonas brothers are a better band for kids then greenday, justin timberlake,50 cent, brittany spear and more this is coming from an 11 year old that listend to alot to find out what kids should and should not listen to i could say more but i cant
stop judging 3 harmless very cute boys they are cristain and so am i i dont see any thing wrong with them!
Hi.. PPl y are u all so caught up.. I jus wanted to say that ive read everyone’s comments/// n i hav to say that ur all right.. u knw y becuz all teenage boys are like that… maybe if some grown ups even remember that no matter what u will like someone whether ur a woman or a man… teenage boys are in their own world but ya knw what that’s completely normal… I also understand that sometimes It’s a hard life to knw that their are some consequences that comes with ur religion but i dont think that the Jonas Brothers actually broke their boundaries….. They may have made mistakes yes but so what… I’m a Christian… Jonas Brothers may nt hav been sendin out the right messages bt its probably a mistake… It’s nt too late to fix it… Sometimes if ur a kid u actually get carried away in life.. Sometimes religion may nt seem important at our stages but it is.. If parents understand they way we are they’l knw what it actually feels like.. Not sayin that they wouldnt.. Instead of ppl try to discuss this matter with each other they should jus sit down n talk to the Jonas Brothers…. I knw that ppl would think i’m takin sides but im not… I’m 13 n i love the Jonas Brothers nt matter if they make mistakes i would still love their music but to add to that their messages sent are really good… if u listen to them.. but jus for the other 2 songs to which every1 is off the wall with.. like year 3000 n stuff like that are jus things to get carried away with.. of course the Jonas Brothers my nt have meant to send out the wrong messages but at least it’s better than some of the artist who doesnt even make sense into what they are saying… It’s everone’s choice to stop listenin to them, or keep on believeing but u gotta make the decision of what u believe in n go along with it.. It’’s ur choice..
I knw im kinda weird so interpret it.k
laters
I knw i sent a comment b4 but that comment you wouldnt be able to understand clearly… i JUIS WANTED TO SAY I was a fan of the Jonas Brothers n i didnt knw that they were Christians… I didnt hear the song Joy to the World and Dear Gd as yet… Last 3 days ago I was caught up into listenin all other kinds of music which didnt make sense n while i was downloading songs i searched for Jonas Brothers n i saw those 2 songs.. After i listened to them then i realised that although I was a Christian n i go to church n stuff i wasnt givin my heart to the lord n all of a sudden i can’t help bt listen to the jonas brothers songs over n over… Jonas Brothers have made mistakes b4 but so what just becuz they are christians doesnt mean they dont make mistakes and they are still teenage boys… But i must say that they could hav been a litttle more responsible.. But i would say that Jonas Brothers are great kids with etraordinary personalities great hearts and a great destiny and i just knw that they would choose right from wrong……… They send out good messgages but its better to listen to that than green day, 36 marfia and all those stuff…. So ppl think about what you wanna do it’s ur choice to leave the Jonas Brothers hangin or to actually help them and give support.. They hav great talents and i knw that each person here would nt want to see that fall..
ok.. this is just one of their many songs, they have many amazing songs that do go way ‘deeper than their own popularity’. Obviously you haven’t actually heard any of their other songs, or listened to their interviews, because if you did, you wouldn’t dare make these comments. They are constantly thanking God for everything they do and the youngest, Nick (Nicholas), actually had a solo deal and recorded tons of different christian songs. Not to mention as a band, they have ‘Time For Me To Fly’, ‘Hold On’, ‘Eternity’, and many others, that mention faith and christianity. Plus, beyond that they have inspirational songs, such as: ‘Underdog’, ‘I Am What I Am’, ‘Take A Breath’(which actually helped my friend stop cutting herself), and the newer song ‘A Little Bit Longer (You Don’t Even Know)’, which is about Nick’s diabetes. So maybe, before you go and bad mouth someone, being a ‘christian music journalist’, which obviously means you have the right resources, that next time, maybe you should watch a few interviews and do a little more research!
Ally – you say “and the youngest, Nick (Nicholas), actually had a solo deal and recorded tons of different christian songs.” Yes – Nick did originally sign a solo deal and recorded a couple of songs – but Nick NEVER released a solo album.
Had you actually read the CD review itself instead of just the blog post, you would have read where I said, “INO Records signed 12-year old Nicholas Jonas in October of 2004 and his solo debut was to release in late November. By December there was no CD, but the single “Joy To The World (A Christmas Prayer)” was being offered for download and it was slated to be on the debut, which was pushed to a 2005 release.
Fast forward to early 2006 and the Nick solo project had turned into a May release of the Jonas Brothers.”
Everyone is entitled to an opinion where music is concerned and that includes me. You don’t have to agree with my opinion, but don’t accuse me of not doing my job just because you don’t like what I say.
Hi, my name is Courtney, and I’m a Christian recording artist. I sing with my family, and I understand the hardships there are in finding good, clean music to listen to. Jesus is a VERY important part of my life, and while I love Christian music, I sometimes want to listen to different music that maintains a focus on relationships and other things that deal with what’s going on in my life besides Christ. I found this in the Jonas Brothers. Whenever I listen to an artist, I remember that “actions speak louder than words,” and the way the Jonas Brothers act is completely Christian. They are very humble and are simply looking to making fun music that anyone can listen to. I have their new cd, and I don’t see anything negative about it. Yes, they may not have Christian lyrics on their songs, but that doesn’t refute the fact that they’re Christians. I’m sure that’s now what you were trying to infer, christianmusic, but I just thought I would say that. I must, however, disagree with your statement that they water down their message to fit in. They have always expressed their firm belief in Christ and purity, but they never said they were a Christian band. They are, in fact, a mainstream pop/rock band, and their music is actually very different than most artists in this genre. If you look at everyone else in this genre, for example, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and many others people have named, their songs are very inappropriate with bad language, drug and alcohol references, and sexual innuendos. However, the Jonas Brothers have been able to make it to the top by singing innocent love songs with powerful messages. I think that in itself is going against the grain. I can totally understand your viewpoint on this issue and why you feel those songs may be inappropriate, but I thought I would allow you to see a different side of things. Honestly, I don’t think your children are going to receive a negative message from the Jonas Brothers’ music as they would from some other artist in their genre. They are actually a great alternative to the rest of the music in the mainstream world.
excuse me but, would you like them to be britnay spears or hannah montana? i think you should appreciate them kicking there carer then they would start some christan songs the are doing just fine i am a full blown christan if god had a problem with them he would not make them so succsesful do you not belive in our lord? do you not have faith in our lord?
ok, now i didnt read everyones comment cuz there were too many, but i would just like to say: if you dont like the jonas brothers then you are crazy!!! they are amazing guys! the are not like a lot of the stars today. in their music they call girls beautiful instead of sexy, they are not on drugs, they are not out drinking all the time or getting into trouble. they are so close with their family they go on tour with them! And they set a wonderful example for their little bro, frankie! if you have anything bad to say obout the jonas brothers, you really should just keep it to yourself!
The Jonas Brothers are amazing IM totally obsessed! and im getting tired of hearing that only 13 or younger hear there songs or like them! im 16 and lots of 18/17/14 hear their songs! even adults are obsessed!
there are great role models they help people with their songs and usually u dont find tth! they dont talk about drug or anything like tht they respect girs tht how they were raised! i mean many boys dont have purity ring and now its a new trend ! if i was a parent i would thank them!
I know that it’s been a while since you’ve written this blog, but The Jonas Brothers have come out and publicly stated that they feel very strongly about waiting for marriage before having sex. Some are currently mocking this statement and even comparing them to Britney Spears (some time ago, Britney had claimed the same moral standard.)
I am also a mother & although the lyrics you posted may seem a bit self-righteous, don’t we tell our kids all the time to think big and follow their dreams? Is it really a bad thing if they believe that in the future all their dreams might come true?
I think the JB is awesome! What i don’t think is awesome is the screaming! >( I can’t go to their concerts because of those loud noises. my ears are so sensitive that it hurts!>( it rely bugs me! what rely bugs me the most is that my dreams are destroyed.
I really wouldn’t call the Jonas Brothers music Christian Music because they don’t talk about God. They don’t express their love for Jesus either. So I really don’t get why would people call it Christian Music. I guess now people call everything Chirstian music. To me their music sounds more like Pop music. Everyone is confused!
I totally agree with Analysia the Jonas Brothers music is not Christian Music. They don’t speek about God or Jesus. So why would they call it Christian Music. CONFUSED!
the 2 people above me have u ever freakin’ heard the song DEAR GOD or A CHRISTMAS PRAYER by them they r so christian music stars u guys r just haters so shutup if u have no nice things to say about reall good guys like The Jonas Brothers
Savannah,
If Analysia or Vall bought the CD “It’s About Time” then NO, they didn’t hear “Dear God” or “A Christmas Prayer” because NEITHER of those songs were on the release.
I love how these comments have been replying to each other for two years! From when the Jonas Brothers were barely known to now when they’re extremely popular.
Real quick comment here.
The Jonas Brothers have NEVER declared themselves a Christian band. They are Christian PEOPLE but the band itself is not in that genre. Maybe one day they’ll move some songs in that direction which I could definately see in them.
A) The Jonas Brothers are not a Christian band, the y never declared it nor do they talk about God/ Christ in their music
B) Just because they started with a few Christian songs doesn’t mean that they have to sing about Christianity all of the time
C) They are great, morally stable teenage boys who write music about personal experiences and dreams
D) They are way better for your kids than just about any other pop band
E) If they were doing something morally wrong, don’t you think their father, a Christian priest, would stop them?
Your review has problems. They talk about themselves in one song that they remade written by a British band. Especially for you having two kids, I would think you would have something better to say then to talk about religion. If everyone talked about religion, like you do, than this planet would be crazy. Do you know who they are today? I’m guessing you don’t by the look of your reviews.
Th Jonas Brothers have in fact stated that they are Christians as just a couple of weeks ago they had a special edition People Magazine in which the three stated that they are Christians and stated their promise to God not to have sex before marriage. Joe also wears a ring on his left ring finger to promise to God to abstain from sex till marriage. They are the sons of a pastor! Also Nick stated that he takes his Bible with him everywhere he goes! As much as i love the brothers and that they seem much more righteous than any other so called “christian” of today eg. Beyonce, I think they are conforming to the world with their music. Songs such as ‘what i go to school for’ maybe a cover but that does not change a think. it still has a secular message! i think they should be using this fame to preach what they practice rather than trying to fit in with the world. And the excuse that it is “harmless” fun for teens and young kids is ridiculous as I am a 16 yr old!
they aren’t under a Christian label at all! so suck it!
Denise,
INO, the label that they originally came out on is, in fact, a Christian label. The next time you decide to make such a tasteless comment in public, you should make sure that you know what you are talking about before clicking “say it.”
Im not on here to judge anybody at all. but what the jonas brothers are doing i think is a great influence. I firmly believe that they will stand up for what is right. Honesly, God has put them here for his reasons, and we may not know it. There have been many christian artists in the secular music world for insistance Amy Grant, Lifehouse, Switchfoot, flyleaf, Michael W. Smith, Stacie Orrico, Aly and A.J. and soo many others. I really hope we look inside and ask who are we to judge anybody. Remember in the bible it says “thou without sin cast the first stone”. They are different then britney spears, and all the other labels out there in the business.
Ok so i’ve been a Jonas Brothers fan for about a year now and have listened to all of their songs. Year 3000 isn’t their song and it was infact rewritten to make it more suitable for them to sing and for the age group they target. Also YES they are Christians but they are NOT a christian band and have never made out that they are. Nick Jonas’s solo album is more of a christian album but now the boys write about personal experiences, etc. Their songs reflect their feelings and experiences so they will have some christian songs but not all of them will be. And whether they are singing about their beliefs or not they are still good role models for kids despite (as much as possible) being normal teenage boys. Im almost 18 but i know that if i was older and had kids that i would much rather my kids have the jonas brothers as role models than others such as Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus
Okay seriuosly a persons isnt defined by what religion they are. not just because youre christian, you have to sing songs about God. Yes the Jonas Brothers are Christian but that’s not the style of music that they sing. remember Nick Jonas tried “to do a christian album. how well did go? not so good it was never released.
Why do so many people not get the fact that INO is a CHRISTIAN RECORD LABEL that puts out CHRISTIAN MUSIC!?!?!? If you call it a duck then it had best look like a duck and quack like a duck too! This cd was sold as a CHRISTIAN
i understand why you don’t really like the song, and your right it doesn’t really have a message but who cares. as a song writer myself i do put a message in most of my songs but i also like to write songs that don’t have a message and are just fun to sing along to. and when you write a song you write about your own experiences and what you know and feel so writting about your own popularity is not uncommon because it’s what you know and only the jonas brothers know why they wrote that line, because for all we know they could have put that line in there just as a fill in.
and to the person named brian they are teenage boys! of course their gonna write about girls and the stupid things they’ll do. and if your looking at it from a christian point of view then you shouldn’t critisize the song what i go to school for you should critisize on another song like hold on!!!!!
They were never a Christian group, and they will never be a Christian group. They sing songs people can relate to. That’s just the way they roll. What Nick did when he was 10 or so is IRRELEVANT! They are great singers, and they set a good example. We COULD be listening to Brittany Spears, but we don’t. We listen to them. Which is obviously better.
Okay, I hear some of you saying “you should be glad your kids are listening to THIS instead of SOMETHING WORSE.” So, that SOUNDS good… but that’s just what the world wants christians to believe. The world is constantly trying to get us to make things okay that just aren’t. It’s much easier to get sucked in slowly… The Jonas brothers have an AMAZING platform and I do not believe they are using it for God’s glory like they could… in the end their names are not going to make a difference. Jesus Name will. And yes, His name is offensive, but we are called to Proclaim His name in EVERY ARENA of this world! How awesome would it be for the Jonas Brothers (IN THE MAINSTREAM MARKET!!!) to tell the world that there is more to life than girlfriends and boyfriends! Our kids need something more to grab onto in their tween years!
Another thing too- people tend to classify christian music vs. secular music by what label an artist is on – let me tell you that is NOT the point. The point is the message of the music and MORE THAN THE WORDS it is the ACTIONS of the artists who back them up. People get hung up on “Well, every song doesn’t have to say’Jesus’ ”
What I say to that is – yes, I understand that point – every christian song doesn’t say Jesus either. BUT, now please hear this – I believe that everything that a true Christian does, whether he paints or sings or sells cars, should be worship. yes worship! Something that glorifies God. I believe, working unto Him is what makes something “Christian”.
Yes, I do agree that the Jonas Brothers music is better IN compare to OTHERS- I am very glad has not been about sex! However, we are making that an excuse for not speaking about God, and for them not using their platform to bring people to Him!
Seriously, fame won’t last – it will all be gone, so for those who get the spotlight of the world
why not, why not use it for something that lasts…
We need to stop making excuses.
The Jonas Brothers definitely seem like genuine guys with strong family support and I do believe their Christian faith and upbringing shows through their actions, demeanor, and most of their lyrics.
I think there are alot of American Christians whose Christianity is very “Americanized”– in other worlds, better values than most of the world, but yet, not totally much different than the world… and with all of us, it’s just a few steps towards the world, and we are wholly in it. (Look at Jessica Simpson who once sang in her church and her father was a youth pastor).
We watch immoral t.v., we desire expensive cars, we value “passing” things that have no eternal value, alot of us want to “fit in” and I think the author of this blog, and some others, are making the point that some of the J.B’s songs have a “fit in” sound to their lyrics. In other words, some of their songs don’t reflect things like humility, longsuffering, self-denial, putting others first, etc. (The high school song about the guy wanting the girl whose boyfriend is out of town sounds like something King David might’ve sung before he slept with Bathsheba).
When I think of Jesus, and the life he lived, and the lives the disciples lived, and the persecutions and suffering of Christians around the world, and when I see my own self compromising in so many ways, I think, we as 21st century American Chrsitians face a lot of temptations and are often lukewarm in our Christianity, and I think some of the JB’s lyrics sound “lukewarm” and compromising. And they are in a field (secular music) in which it’s all about fame and fortune.
Granted, they are not a “Christian band,” but yet, isn’t that just a matter of semantics? They are a secular label, but aren’t they truly a “Christian” band?
I think rather than “bash” others on here and get heated with judgements, etc. with people who you don’t even know, maybe instead you can simply pray for the Jonas Brothers and pray that they will stand strong in the face of the temptations they will undoubtedly face as young men with huge popularity and now wealth.
I saw an interview with them tonight, and they didn’t want to discuss their purity rings. I think it’s great they have them, but I think they don’t want to appear “freakish” to others. Obvioulsy, they are somewhat struggling with the challenge of being Christians in a highly public secular field. But I don’t think it’s our place to judge them. I don’t think they are “sinning” by not saying anythig, but we should be discerning and I think that’s what the original poster was getting at. If a mother feels that their lyrics are not something she wants her children listening to, I don’t think she’s wrong in her decision or thoughts about it, and I don’t think it’s right for us to judge her as being uptight, judgemental, etc.
Supposedly, even Jessica Simpson is a Christian, and Brittney Spears, and alot of other celebrities claim to also be Christians, yet their lives don’t at all reflect a desire for Christ. The Bible does tell us to be discerning, yet few of us are because we want what we want and we don’t want to hear that maybe it’s not what we should have.
When I was a young girl, I fed myself a diet of Amy Grant music… songs like “Thy Word,” “El Shadaii,” and others that were so completely all about God… and yes, the J.B. are fine, nice, humble guys… but we need to “guard our hearts” and watch what you fill your head with. Yes, the J.B. are FAR better than Justin Timerberlake, Brittney Spears, etc… but just because you like a band, doesn’t mean you shoudn’t show some discernment in what you listen to. And if you are someone who truly desires Christ and wants to live a life that is not “lukewarm” and does not compromise but truly is radical… well, be discerning in what you listen to and really think about what the lyrics are saying and how they affect you.
And instead of getting into arguments about the J.B., pray for them and focus on your own lives and question your own Christianity, not the Chrsitianity of others (although you do need to be discerning…).
Anna, (Comment #50), said it so well. There is a lot of wisdom in what she said.
The Bible tells us to “guard our hearts”– we need to be careful with what we feed our minds and hearts with. I once had to commute and all there was was secular radio to listen to, and I found myself hearing this seemingly nice, innocent song but realized it was all abougt man-bashing and being self-sufficient, proud, etc.. and I realized that I didn’t want to keep feeding on that message. I finally decided to just turn the radio off, and I spent the hour commute praying and I ended up that summer feeling closer to the Lord than I ever had before.
I also agree that today’s youth really need far better messages that what they are given. I also think they need to ask themselves why they are so defensive of the Jonas Brothers (if they are) and/or why they feel so impassioned about them. Do they have that same defensiveness and passion about Jesus? Do they defend Jesus when someone says something about him they disagree with? Would they scream and go crazy (like they do at J.B. concerts) if they were at a Billy Graham crusade, or at a sermon that Jesus was preaching?
Yes, they are better than Brittney, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that all their songs are good for your heart, mind, or soul.
i understand some peoples arguements that while the jonas brothers may be fairly moral people who set good examples, they do not sing about God and not all of their songs are good for you.
however, the jonas brothers are christians, and everything that they do is based on their faith, even if they do not openly speak about God int heir music.
the jonas brothers definitely aren’t perfect, but i believe that the majority of their songs send good messages to kids, and none send bad messages.
i feel safe listening to jb music – i know i’m not going to be confronted with any issues that are innappropriate, and i may even learn a few lessons along the way.
this ia quote from kevin which appeared in an interview with christian music planet. he says, nothing we write is ever offensive, and even if were writing about girls or other issues, its still coming from a faith perspective.
if you want deeper meaning look at their song “A Little Bit Longer” they are teenagers, what do u exspect? A lovey dovey mushey love song!!!!! so all you parents need to be quiet the Jonas brothers rock…………………….i bet when you were younger you had a band you obssessed over. Didnt you? that what i thought so be quiet!!!!! just because its not deep dont mean its not good 2 listen 2 or dance 2!
They COULD be listening to A LOT worse i mean the Jonas Brothers arnt really bad at all… Nick (the youngest) wrote a song “Dear God” like a few years ago and It is like THE best song ever… It is on youtube if you want to listen to it. And those songs that people were talking about on here like “what i go to school for” and “year 3000″ are just fun songs. They have much more heart felt songs like “a little bit longer” and “Sorry” and “Dear God” They really are a good band. and there parents are good people too…So i think it is ok that your kids are listening to them but its up to you if they do or not.
first of all I just wanna say that I love The Jonas Brothers
I’m a huge a fan
and I will always love them to death
and I love the song Year 3000 I don’t care that they got that song from Busted at least they changed the words we don’t wanna hear the original one they have nasty words we don’t wanna hear
if you are so concerned, pray for them, dont judge them.
this way they can reach the non-christian world and the christian world.
they are making a HUGE impact on girls lives, and even some boys…
and its not in a bad way. so i think we should all keep our mouths shut.
besides, noone in the world likes being preached at, we all kno that
xo
Wow, look at all the comments. Some on one side and some on the other. I’m kinda in the middle. I don’t see anything wrong with their music, but I don’t see anything right either. Now don’t go hating me. I have the self-titled album and a little bit longer by this band and I think their okay. My problem is mostly with the newest album where it seems almost every song was about teen love (not that that’s wrong). They are not the only band out there that has positive lyrics and it’s not boxed in one genre. Another problem I have is that they clearly were influenced by the “business” Here’s the tracklisting for Nick’s solo:
1. “Dear God” (Nick Jonas version) 3:21
2. “Time for Me to Fly” (Nick Jonas version) 3:31
3. “Appreciate” 3:08
4.”When You Look Me in the Eyes” (Nick Jonas version) 4:01
5. “Higher Love” 3:54
6. “Please Be Mine” (Nick Jonas version) 4:04
7. “I Will Be the Light” 4:16
8. “Don’t Walk Away” 3:35
9. “Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)” 3:58
10. “Crazy Kind of Crush on You” 2:54
11. “Wrong Again” 3:55
While there are some familiar songs on here the majority seems to be more christian influenced. My point is the industry can have a huge impact on an artist’s work, no matter how subtle it may seem. Just ask Seventh day slumber. The leader told of when his band were looking for a label when Sony gave him a tough choice: quit singing about God and about partying and alcohol, or there would be no deal. They chose the obvious God because he could not quit singing about the One who gave him his voice (read his life story). Where would it end? A little compromise here makes it easier to compromise there. The Jonas Brothers have so much talent, but they need to remember even trophies will soon end up in the trash can. Where I live they are an outdated fad. The Top music station acts as if they never heard of them. Today is twilight obsession, tomorrow who knows.
Finally why do people think that making christian music puts you in a box? Is it because most stations don’t play christian music? If that is the case then it isn’t the music, but rather the industry. I think we should encourage people to look for music that matches our beliefs instead of contradicting them. I don’t know how many time I’ve heard people say “I didn’t know christian music was this cool” when listening to disciple. There is a whole world of christian bands who play rock music or pop music or even death metal. Christian music isn’t boxed into just one genre so there is some out there for everybody. None of the top hits today seem to be positive unless “one more drink” is talking about a non-alcoholic drink. “Chopped N Screwed” is a perfectly positive song about…(ranting about the positiveness of being chopped N screwed)”turnin’ me on” is a song about being turned on by God…what that’s not what the song is about? What about “Womanizer”? That neither? From what I’ve seen radio doesn’t want to play the positive music. No, it wants the sex filled, alcohol at parties, sneaking out of your house to do drugs, killing somebody and then joking about it kinda music. The way I see it, the only way to keep my message out there on the radio is to change my message to what the radio wants. I’m sure you all have heard of Katy Perry. Look up “a tale of two katys” and see what you come up with. Don’t compromise your message to make it more “radio friendly” because God is more than likely not radio’s biggest friend. I choose God over radio. We should set an example and instead of listening to what radio gives us, we should command them to keep the positive music and to throw away that junk we don’t want kids hearing. That being said The Jonas Brothers are probable another phase and will likely move onto more thought-provoking music later. It is up to the JB to make that thought-provoking music for them. Keep making music JB and God Bless
