The youngest of 14 children, Tamela was born Tamela Jean Johnson on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas. Raised in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), Mann was singing in the Holy Tabernacle church's adult choir by the time she was 12 years old.

Tamela Mann Biography

Recruited by Kirk Franklin to sing with his group, The Family, Tamela sang on five of his albums. During this time, she also cut her acting chops in David E. Talbert's gospel musical He Say…She Say…But What Does God Say? In 2000, she starred as Cora Brown in Tyler Perry's stage play I Can Do Bad All By Myself and quickly became a part of the Perry franchise. She has appeared in several of his movies and is a regular character on Meet The Browns.

She married David Mann (who was also a part of Franklin's The Family) in 1988. The couple is parents to four children: Joy Mann (born September 29, 1990), Daniel Mann (born June 25, 1992), Faith Serenity Mann (born March 4, 1996) and Tamera Mann (born October 19, 1998).
