Exclusive Interview with Detour 180

Meet the members of Detour ...

Adrian Robertson: lead vocals
Matt Chapman: rhythm guitar
Cain Coulton: electric guitar
Jonathan 'Jono' Scarlet: bass
Evan Cooper: drums

Kim: I understand that you guys have your US release due out in a couple of days.

Adrian: Yeah. It will be in all Christian stores in the next couple of weeks so that's sort of exciting.

Kim: How do you like it here in the sunny south?

Adrian: It's cool but extremely hot. The heat is hard to get used to. It's the middle of winter back home in New Zealand, so people are snow-boarding and skiing and we're here in the sweltering heat. But it's cool, you've got a beautiful country.

Kim: Thank you. One day I want to go to New Zealand. How long have ya'll been on this tour?

Matt: This is our fifth week now and the tour lasts for two more weeks.

Kim: How's it been going?

Matt: It's been a great tour. It's been awesome to work with bands like NewSong and Tait. We've learned heaps from it. It's been a real privilege and we're really grateful for the opportunity.

Detour 180 on stage Kim: I understand that you guys only got together in April of 2002. You've come a long way for such a new band. God's really been opening some doors and blessing you guys. What's it like to go from just joining together to a major tour and releasing albums in two different countries?

Matt: It's amazing. Just like you said, we just constantly remember that God is the heart of everything and it's because of Him that we've got these opportunities. We just want to do the best with what we've got, no matter if we're in New Zealand or Australia or America. We think he's given us something unique that we can bring to your culture and other cultures around the world. It's exciting. We seem to be on something of a fast track, but it's cool.

Kim: You know, a lot of people say that God's timetable is slower than ours because we want that instant gratification, but I'd say that He's really been fast-tracking you guys. I understand that you were only the second band that the Parachute label signed.

Adrian: Yeah, the Parachute label is still fairly new. The record company has only been around for a few years. Are you familiar with the Parachute Band at all?

Kim: Yes.

Adrian: They were the original starters on the Parachute label. Just now, they've just recently signed a couple of other acts so it should be fun. We might have some more New Zealand music coming out soon.

Kim: It seems like there are quite a few bands taking America by storm.

Cain: (laughs) Yeah - with funny accents.

Kim: What are the plans for after the tour?

Adrian: Some of us are staying over. I think Cain and his wife Karen are going to stay in Nashville. Most of the rest of us are going to go home for a couple of weeks between tours. We've got another tour starting September 17th so we've got about two weeks off. To see our friends and family will be good.

Kim: Yes, and to go back to where it's still winter time and actually cool....

Jono: (laughs) yeah! For a couple of weeks.

Kim: Is it hard being so far away from home in a place where things are so different?

Adrian: Honestly, no. I mean, of course you miss your family. These guys, the rest of the band, they've got girlfriends who they really miss. At the same time, it's great coming to another country and see your family in Christ; to be able to go into any church and to know that you've got that in common. It just makes you feel at home straight-away. But we do miss things like family and stuff and some of the lifestyles of home. But it's cool to come here and meet others who love God.

Jono: It's a lonely road being on tour - a lonely, lonely road.

Kim: What about the food? I understand from some other bands I've talked to that the food is one of the best parts of being on the road.

Adrian: The food varies in every place we go. Sometimes you turn up and it's fantastic. Other times, uh, yeah....you might just end up going to Jack in the Box or something. It's cool, Americans are so hospitable, you guys have looked after us really well. People are so friendly and so willing to give us lots of food. (laughs) It's a good place to be.

Kim: Well guys, I appreciate you taking the time to talk with me. Anything you'd like to say in closing?

Adrian: Yes...the CD's coming out and it will be in all stores in the next couple of weeks. We'll be touring in the states until mid-October and we'll be back next year, hopefully to give you some more. Check out the web site and you can see where we are and if we're coming to your town. It's at www.detour180.com We'll catch you there!
