From the Band's Bio: In the three years since Reunion Records recording artist NewSong released their last pop album, life has been one explosive surprise after another, something they could never have predicted.

Those surprises came in the form of an unprecedented, nation-wide reaction to the 2000 release of NewSong's poignant Christmas song, "The Christmas Shoes," originally recorded on the group's Sheltering Tree album. Co-written by Carswell, the song tied the record for garnering the No. 1 spot on Billboard's AC chart in just three weeks. The song continued to build momentum in 2001 when NewSong released a beautifully-crafted holiday album titled The Christmas Shoes. A novella based on the song was written by Nashville author Donna VanLiere, and appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list two years in a row. That was followed by a nationally-televised made-for-TV movie, "The Christmas Shoes," produced by CBS and starring actors Rob Lowe ("The West Wing") and Kimberley Williams (Father of the Bride). The television special surpassed its other network competitors and brought in 17 million viewers. In early 2003, the album's success was capped by a Grammy nomination for "Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album" and garnered a 2003 Dove Award.

Me and Michael O'Brien of NewSong

Exclusive Interview with Michael O'Brien

Kim: I'm talking with Michael O'Brien, who plays the keyboards and sings with NewSong. How are you doing today Michael?

Michael: I'm doing real good. It's good to be here.

Kim: Yeah, you're hanging out inside in the air conditioning!

Michael: Yeah, we have the air conditioned bus which is kind of nice.

Kim: How long have you been with the group?

Michael: I'm going on my fifth year now. It's been four years and this is my fourth Toccoa Fest. It's pretty cool.

Kim: I know that NewSong originated in Valdosta, GA. Are you from Georgia too?

Michael: No, I'm one of the rebellious who's living in Nashville. I commute down every week to be with them, but you know, sometimes they come through with the bus so it's not too bad.

Kim: So, tell me what's going on with you and with newsong?

Michael: We just finished a new record that's coming out on September 9th called More Life and we've got 12 songs on there. You know, basically NewSong never really cuts any new songs like, stylistically, we're pretty much the same. It's pop/soul music and we're just having a good time man. Being out here and where ever we go - you know, talking about Christ. I get to share my testimony every night and see people coming come to know Christ. To us that's just the ultimate thing. Music is just a tool to spread the Gospel. We're just excited about being able to do it still.

Kim: What's coming up in the next little bit for ya'll?

Michael: We've got Summer Jam that we're just finishing up. We've got another month and then it will be the release of our record and we do the More Life tour. I think the thing that gets us the most busy is the thing we call the Christmas Shoes tour. It's a song that we did about two or three years ago.

Kim: Yes, that's an awesome song.

Michael: Thanks. You know, it's a seasonal song that people keep on wanting to hear, even in the summer time. We won't do it today though. But that's enough to keep us busy the whole year. Doing stuff here and there and having we're having fun. This is a fun time.

Kim: There's some great music here today.

Michael: Oh man, my favorite band is Tait. Those guys are incredible. I listen to them every time I get to hear them. You know, Plus One, those guys are real nice. The guy singing right now, Todd Agnew, is very talented. It's just fun to be around people who love music and want to mix it with the ministry. You know what I'm saying? I mean it would be cool to go out with the Eagles and just hang out with people like that, but the bottom line is that it would be hard to share Christ in those kind of settings. We just love getting to do it.

Kim: It's been great talking to you and keeping up with you on the web.

Michael: Thanks. www.newsongonline.com You're www.about.com right? I'll have to check you out.

Kim: Thanks Michael.

Michael: Thank you.
