David Phelps has been credited by many as having one of today's most spectacular voices. Between his solo career and his time with the Gaither Vocal Band, he has shared that voice with thousands. His audiences have included George W. Bush, massive crowds at Billy Graham Crusades, and millions of "ABC News" viewers, and his voice has brought him multiple GRAMMY and Dove awards.
He was quite young when those around him recognized his incredible talent. David himself knew from the beginning that he wanted to perform music for the glory of God. Sadly though, not everyone in this life understood his commitment to faith. "I had several teachers who felt that I should be singing opera, or performing somewhere on Broadway," he said. "In college particularly, I had a teacher who kept pushing me strongly toward classical music, but when she finally accepted that Charistian music was what God was calling me to do, that became the turning point for me."
From there, as a teenager, David went on to become the winner of the 1988 Seminar In the Rockies, the youngest winner of the contest at that time. After graduating and being the Artist in Residence at First Baptist Church in Hurst, TX, in 1996 he and his wife Lori packed their bags and moved to Nashville in search of a record deal.
After six months, David had not found an opportunity, and since he had given up his job back home, they were running out of money to live on. A visit with family and prayers for a miracle turned things around since a miracle is exactly what God had in mind. The very next day, back in Nashville, David met with executives from Word Records and found out about an opportunity with the Gaither Vocal Band. A mere two weeks later he was an official member.
Throughout his success with the Gaither Vocal Band, David still dreamed of a solo project that would show his own style. Revelation is that dream come true.
