There are several things that you can count on with tobyMac -- He will deliver great music; he will set trends rather than following them; he will keep things fresh in his music while staying true to his Christian roots. Eye On It, his fifth studio release, incorporates all of those elements and more. If you were expecting Tonight Part II or even another aspect of Diverse City, you won't find it. Instead, you'll find appealing lyrics, fresh beats and funky 101 from the veteran artist and producer. Yes, he always has those things, but somehow, he just gets better and better at delivering them!

Blending elements of Hip Hop / Rap, pop, reggae, rock and even a little dubstep, tobyMac also tosses in a few humorous and playful lyrics that show he can still have fun and laugh while still being a complete Christian man of 48 years on "Mac Daddy (Tru's Reality)," which features his son, Truett (aka TruDog). (Editors note: It's a pet peeve of mine that so many people seem to think that us Christians are unable to have fun and enjoy life, but I won't climb on my soap box!) Family, another important element in his life, is also called out and showcased on this release in moving and sincere songs like "Family" and "Made For Me."
Kicking off with the popular single, "Me Without You," Eye On It is catchy regardless of whether Toby is singing songs to God, his fans or his family. Yes, I said fans. "Thankful For You" is a song written specifically for the fans that have supported him since the beginning. While we, the listening audience, are used to the "thank you to my fans" moments on the awards shows, it's rare for an artist in any genre (secular or Christian) to actually write a song thanking fans.
Speaking of being thankful, tobyMac is also obviously thankful for the musical talent in his life and he shows it by including them on his albums. Fellow Christian rapper, Lecrae, Blanca From Group1Crew and Jamie Grace are all found on this release, each adding an extra layer of excellence to the overall project.
Of course, no music review would be complete without mentioning those stand-out tracks that just reach out and grab you. "Lose Myself" is one such song. Kicking off with a soft and sweet piano run that is full of wonder and promise, the song changes gears to become a get-you-on-your-feet anthem that reminds us that in order to find Jesus, we have to lose ourselves. The aforementioned "Made For You," a tribute to his Jamaican-born wife, Amanda, is reggae-infused magic that tells the story of how their differences come together to form a whole.
If you're looking for something that is comfortable and "been there, done that, got the t-shirt," you'll be barking up the wrong tree. However, if you want music that will turn up the burners, going from intense to profound while maintaining a sense of swagger throughout, Eye On It is just what the doctor ordered.
