The Annual BET Awards will air this year on Tuesday, June 28 at 8 pm (ET) with hosts Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Best Gospel Artist is, as usual, a prominent category, with nominees

  • Fred Hammond
  • Donnie McClurkin
  • Ruben Studdard
  • CeCe Winans
  • Kanye West

all going for the win.

Kanye West is also up for Best Male Hip Hop artist and for Video of the Year for "Jesus Walks".

Just another awards show - right? Not exactly. Unlike many of the "secular" awards shows, faith doesn't come across as an after-thought on the BET Awards and Best Gospel Artist honestly seems as important a category as the rest. Perhaps it is because BET isn't just another music channel.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) debuted on the air in January of 1980. At that time the main focus was music videos, without the movies, news programs or reality shows. However, one thing that Robert L. Johnson, founder, chairman and CEO, put into the mix, was faith. Bobby Jones Gospel was first aired on BET in 1980 and has been a staple ever since.

In a day and age where music television seems to shun anything even remotely "religious", BET stands tall above the rest with daily offerings of faith-based programming. Monday through Saturday you can start your day at 6 am (ET) with BET's Inspiration with Brother Gerard. If you're a night owl or an extremely early riser, you can watch the same show at 4am (ET). On Sunday's the gospel block goes even further with ...

  • BET's Morning Inspiration

  • Bobby Jones Gospel

  • Video Gospel

  • Lift Every Voice with John P. Kee

  • Bobby Jones Gospel

Not your usual fare for secular music tv, but it definitely works. BET should up for an award because this is the one "secular" channel that hasn't blindly turned away from faith.
