Flatfoot 56 is loud and proud and if you like punk, you'll love these guys. The celtic elements intermixed make it the most unusual release of the year and musically as well as lyrically, they're on the money.

Flatfoot 56 - 'Knuckles Up' - Smooth Transitions

Bagpipes and mandolins mixed with 90 mph punk rock is not something that you hear everyday. For that matter, it's not something you would probably ever expect to hear. So prepare yourself, because that is exactly what Flatfoot 56 delivers on their debut Flicker release, Knuckles Up.

That being said, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect with this release. The first track, "This Town," starts off all celtic with the slightest hint of power chords in the background, but at 45 seconds into the song, the speed of punk kicks in - and the transition is well done. That's one thing I have to give this group props on. The transitions between styles within the songs are extremely smooth. That fact almost makes up for several instances where it seems like they threw in everything but the kitchen sink and added vocals that couldn't be picked out word for word. The added shouting from the rest of the band adds further confusion. Yeah - I know ... it's punk and that's how it's supposed to be, but I like to be able to hear the words in my music and these guys have some really great lyrics. (I know this because I read the lyrics sheet!)

More Than Just Noise

The title track, which the band says, "addresses the futility of living life from fight to fight, never quenching the need for physical conflict," is a great example of this band being more than just noise.

An eye for an eye, and everything in between
an eye for an eye, and we’ll pay the prince
an eye for an eye, you defied your maker
an eye for an eye and we’ll all be blind

"Hold Fast" is another example...

From the depths of Sheol to the heart of shalom
we will stand strong together, we will never be alone
fill our cups full of courage, may our face hit the floor
when we are at our lowest point we stand at heaven’s door

Or my other favorite, "Battle of Bones"... In describing the message behind this song, the band says, "This sailor's ballad is a great lesson on how pride can get us into situations we can't handle. It shows the stupidity of arrogance when one isn't in the right position to be proud. Pride kills. It not only hurts us personally but also those around us."

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Flatfoot 56's version of "Amazing Grace." I promise - you've never heard it done like this!
