Sunny Hawkins - 'More of You' - The Review

Sunny Hawkins has already found great success in a number of venues, including doing a year as a principal lead in the Broadway smash, Rent. Somehow she found time to write and record the lush, worshipful songs of More of You, and I’m telling you, the girl brings in da funk. I loved her truthful testimony in the brief intro; she sets you up with high expectations and she delivers. The opening title track is tight, funky and full of hooks. She’s put together a solid vocal team and their breezy backup harmonies and rhythms bring Mary, Mary to mind often as you listen to the whole project.

Most of these tunes have strong pop overtones laying on a smooth bed of R&B, but several, like the breezy “It’s Like Air,” add a nice jazz flair. Her vocal talents are formidable throughout, as is her sincere and fervent worship (“Jesus the Same”). “What a Man” builds from a gentle beginning to a power ballad that highlights Sunny’s vocal chops dramatically, and the powerful lyrics testify mightily of Christ’s sacrificial love. She gives the Lord his due as well in the edgy R&B tune, “You’re Everything.” There’s a whole lot to like about Sunny Hawkins; don’t miss her.
