Since Matt Maher's Welcome to My Life was a 5-star winner in my book, I had high hopes for his Essential Records debut release, Empty and Beautiful. Matt didn't let me down. His musical skills have stayed at their high level of excellence and his voice, if it's possible, has actually gotten better over the past couple of years. Another favorite aspect of Matt Maher is the fact that he uses Biblical passages as the foundation for his lyrics instead of generic sentiment. I guess it's no small wonder that Chris Tomlin has released one of Matt's songs since Chris isn't into generic either.

Top Tracks on 'Empty and Beautiful'

One of the stand-out tracks on Empty and Beautiful are the beautifully piano-driven "On The Third Day." The light and airy feel of this tune is the perfect background and contrast for the strength of Matt's voice. Another absolute winner is the upbeat "As It Is In Heaven." I can see this one being sung in churches and youth groups with ease. "Look Like A Fool" has a message that every one of us need to hear. Of course, "Your Grace Is Enough," which is also on this album, gets major kudos, as does the gorgeous title track, which somehow manages to sound full and lush while being almost stripped down and basic.

The bottom line here is that Matt Maher is one of those songwriters that has something to say and he most definitely has the voice to say it. Empty and Beautiful will leave you anything but "empty!"
