Guide Review - Peculiar People Band - 'Not Ashamed'
The Peculiar People Band is made up of three twenty-something surfers from South Africa with a vision to “change people’s lives” through their music. Like Delirious, they are a worship-focused band who has found success in the mainstream pop radio culture of their own country and have crossed the ocean to try it in the good old USA. If you enjoy Tree 63 you’ll like these Peculiar People. (It’s easy to make an issue of their name but it’s really very Biblical, straight out of 1 Peter 2:9, KJV.)
Guitarist Gary Rea had a hand in the writing of all the songs, and sings lead vocals in most as well. Their passion comes across strong and makes this a very worshipful project, with powerful lyrics and a very upbeat feel to the whole CD. But they will have to work to find what makes them distinctive, or they will get lost in the sauce of the many, many worship bands putting out CDs right now. They have the potential: “On My Mind” reveals their willingness to step up, dealing with the death of a woman with AIDS. Gutsy lyrics, great message. “Rise With You” is a standout track and deserves to be heard on Sunday mornings across the land. Yes, there is something definitely special about these Peculiar People.
