Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on November 25, 2017 While "Comatose" won the 2008 Dove Award for Rock Song of the Year in 2008, Skillet has been around a lot longer than just a few years. In fact, for over 15 years, Skillet has been delivering great music. They've been on radio, on TV, in the movies, on sports shows and commercials and even in video games. Ask any panhead what their favorite Skillet song is and you'll likely get a ton of different answers. These are my favorite Skillet songs -- the ones that I consider to be "the best." "Rest" Skillet - Invincible. Ardent Records One of Skillet's best early ballads, "Rest" was another great song found on 2000's Invincible. From the song: And I rest in the shelter of Your loveAnd I rest in the wonder of Your GraceAnd I rest in the shelter of Your loveAnd I rest in the wonder of You Get the lyrics "Sometimes" Skillet - Awake. INO Records / Atlantic From Awake, the hard rockin' "Sometimes" offers up one of the best guitar solos on the album. The lyrics blow you away with their brutal honesty. Sometimes, we don't want to be better; sometimes we want to roll around in our own degeneracy. From the song: Sometimes don't deny that everything is wrongSometimes rather die than to admit it's my faultSometimes when you cry, I just don't care at allI don't know why I do the things I do to you but Get the lyrics "Forgiven" Skillet - Awake. INO Records / Atlantic Delicate strings offer harmonious touches on "Forgiven" that help it stand out on Awake. "Too Christian" for many mainstream reviewers, the song resonates with those of us who have accepted Christ's sacrifice and forgiveness. From the song: All the promises and liesAll the times I compromiseAll the times You were deniedYou have forgiven Get the lyrics "You Take My Rights Away" Skillet - Invincible. Ardent Records Starting the list with one of the first Skillet songs I ever heard, "You Take My Rights Away" was more techno-industrial rock than the hard rock of today's sound. From their third release, Invincible, after 10+ years, this can now definitely be called "an oldie, but a goodie." From the song: I, I'm invincibleI'm indestructibleIt's my destinyI, I'm invincibleI'm unshakeableThrough the truth in my soul Get the lyrics "Those Nights" Skillet - Comatose. Courtesy of: Lava/Atlantic and Ardent/SRE From , the lyrics for "Those Nights" are some we can all relate to. We've all had those nights when a friend kept us sane and able to live to fight another day. From the song: Stay up late and we'd talk all nightIn a dark room lit by the TV lightThrough all the hard times in my lifeThose nights kept me alive Get the lyrics "Hero" Skillet - Awake. INO Records / Atlantic Certified Gold as a single by RIAA on March 15, 2011, "Hero" was used for the trailers of the 20th century Fox Film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. It also got mainstream love when it was used in the TV commercials for the NFL on NBC, the theme song for WWE Tribute to the Troops and Royal Rumble 2010 and when it was played throughout the 2009 World Series (game 3). From the song: I need a heroWho's gonna fight for what's right?Who's gonna help us survive? Get the lyrics "It's Not Me It's You" Skillet - Awake. INO Records / Atlantic An incensed break-up song that puts the blame squarely where it lies, this rocker has solid guitar chops that aim to please (and do). However, the real beauty here (in my opinion) is that the song meets you where you are at. For me, as a Christian, it was about my "break" from the lies Satan had been feeding me. From the song: It's not me, it's youAlways has been youAll the lies and stupid thingsYou say and do, it's you Get the lyrics "Shout To The Lord" Skillet - Ardent Worship: Live. INO Records Another beautiful older Skillet tune is their cover of "Shout To The Lord," found on Ardent Worship: Live. For someone with such an impressive rock delivery, John Cooper can bring it down to a near whisper and worship with his heart and soul. From the song: Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us singPower and majesty praise to the KingMountains bow down and the seas will roarAt the sound of Your name Get the lyrics "Locked In A Cage" Skillet - Hey You, I Love Your Soul. Ardent Records The provocative rocker from their sophomore release, Hey You, I Love Your Soul, is a song to God, telling Him that we want to be locked into the safety (cage) of His loving arms. From the song: Hold me down 'cause I want to know YouYou bring calm to my rageYou are life and I'm thirsting for YouHold me, hold me, locked in a cageWrapped up inside Your arms Get the lyrics "The Last Night" Skillet - Comatose. Courtesy of: Lava/Atlantic and Ardent/SRE "The Last Night" is about a girl coming to say goodbye because she's so tired, she's ready to commit suicide. The emotion that John's voice interjects into the song practically put you into the room as he shares the reason she should live. From the song: The night is so long when everything's wrong If you give me your hand I will help you hold on Tonight, tonight.
