'Learning to Lose' - The Review
When I first started hearing about The Turning's debut release, Learning to Lose, the press was so great that I got really excited, thinking "Wow! These guys have some how reinvented the wheel." So the first time I listened to the project, I'll admit it ... I was somewhat disappointed. It's not that it's a bad CD; the lyrics are simple but heartfelt and the music is well-played. It's just that I was expecting the kind of fireworks that you see at the end of the show ... a million colors and patterns at once ... and what I got was a steady stream of individual bursts. Since some of the bursts were truly beautiful, I can't complain, I just needed a few minutes to adjust my expectations.Standout tracks include:
- Everything Matters
How do you sleep with the light on?
How do you love with your soul gone?
Do you smile when your world is in your hands?
Can't you see that when everything matters, nothing's what it seems?
- I live for you
I'll dream for you
I'm all for you ... alone?
Delivering Rock and Ballads
The biggest thing about this release is that The Turning can clearly hit all of the bases. They can deliver on the rock end of things with songs like "Through All the Earth" and they can slow down beautifully with ballads like "Escape."I can easily see Learning to Lose being a favorite with youth groups as well as college-age and young adults. It's even got enough to impress slightly older (cough, cough) folks like me! All in all, they may not have turned Christian music as we know it on it's ear, but they certainly delivered with their debut release. I look forward to hearing more great music coming out of their camp.
