Guide Review - Joy Williams - 'Genesis'
An established CCM artist for five years now, Williams in this release produced by Matt Bronleewe, is going for a more modern pop sound, a la Alanis Morrisette or Rebecca St. James. Not a bad idea and she carries it off, for the most part. Only 22, Williams is coming off a year jam-packed with a new management company, a new booking agent, a new record, and most significant, a new husband. The latter is evidenced by the standout track, “I’m in Love With You,” passionate and personal. In fact, there will be some listeners offended by the intimacy of this song, with its mention of waking up together and early morning shaving. I found it refreshing and honest, not to mention right on time. This is how married couples live, people. Let’s not forget Who invented marriage and pronounced it honorable. Also of note is “Beautiful Redemption,” beautifully introspective and honest. “God Only Knows” rocks as it explores the theme of God’s sovereignty. Williams is stepping out and developing as she matures and it’s nice to see. Pop-lovers will embrace this album and find much to enjoy.
