Songs About God

Songs with God in the title and the lyrics

In today's musical landscape there are often more songs played on Christian radio that don't have the name of God anywhere in them than those that do. While believers may automatically know that God is who the song is for or about, non-believers could easily insert the name of a boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, etc.

The debate about the number of "Jesus's per minute" in Christian music is one that has valid points on both sides and it won't be solved here. However, the following songs are all songs that leave no doubt as to who they're about. God is named in the title as well as the lyrics.

1. "All Creatures Of Our God And King" - David Crowder*Band

Passion - Hymns Ancient And Modern
Sparrow Records/sixstepsrecords

From Passion's Hymns Ancient & Modern: Live Songs Of Our Faith, the David Crowder*Band gives this classic hymn a musical facelift without losing any of the reverence.

From "All Creatures Of Our God And King"

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
O praise Him, alleluia
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

He is an awesome God yeah
He's an awesome
Say it again
He's an awesome

3. "By God" - Disciple

Disciple - By God
Slain Records

From the 2001 release by the same name, "By God" (both the album and the song) garnered the band their first two Dove nominations.

From "By God"

I lay me down, let it rise up in my soul
I'm falling down, so You pick me up again
God tear it down, the walls
That the enemy built around me
Send Your spirit down
Where the spirit is, there is freedom

4. "Dear God" - KJ-52

KJ-52 - Five Two Television
BEC Recordings

The powerful and emotional "Dear God" came to us from Five-Two Television. Begging God for the answers that we rarely get, this song will touch a nerve.

From "Dear God"

Dear God I was wondering if you really hear me
Dear God could you speak clearly
Dear God could you come near me
Dear God

Written by Brenton Brown, "Everlasting God" has been recorded by Brenton, Tomlin, Lincoln Brewster and Jeremy Camp, making it a supremely popular worship song.

From "Everlasting God"

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint You won't grow weary

6. "Fingerprints Of God" - Steven Curtis Chapman

Steven Curtis Chapman - Speechless
Sparrow Records

Steven Curtis Chapman wrote "Fingerprints Of God" for his daughter Emily. Slow and easy, it is pure Chapman.

From "Fingerprints Of God"

I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you
I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know it's true
You're a masterpiece that all creation
Quietly applauds
And you're covered with
The fingerprints of God

7. "Friend Of God" - Israel & New Breed

Israel & New Breed - Live From Another Level
Integrity Gospel

"Friend of God" came to us from Live From Another Level, the Dove Awards 2005 Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year. The lyrics are what really hit you, as you're reminded that Christ's sacrifice for us made us friends of the almighty God.

From "Friend Of God"

I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
(Oh yeah)
I am a friend of God
He calls me friend...
(Over and over)
I am a friend of God
(I am a friend of God)

8. "God Believes In You" - Ted Winn

Ted Winn - Balance
Shanachie Entertainment

Ted Winn came into the spotlight as part of the gospel duo Ted & Sheri. After two albums, they lost their record contract and split up. "God Believes In You" came from Ted's debut solo project, which released five years later. The song was one of the Song of the Year nominees in the Atlanta Gospel Choice Awards.

From "God Believes In You"

And that's why you made it through, through your storms
God was on your side, protecting you all along
And whatever he promised you, he will
Listen, God believes, I'm saying God believes, God believes

9. "God Favored Me" - Hezekiah Walker

Hezekiah Walker & LFC - Souled Out
Verity Records

Marvin Sapp and DJ Rogers appeared on this song with Hezekiah Walker, helping Souled Out win the Stellar Contemporary CD of the Year.

From "God Favored Me"

I'm still here, I'm still alive, I'm still blessed, on my way to
my destiny, because the favor of God is on my life. Let me
tell you about love.

10. "God Gave Me You" - Dave Barnes

Dave Barnes - What We Want, What We Get
Razor & Tie

One of my favorite songs from What We Want, What We Get, "God Gave Me You" was written for Dave's wife and talks about how God gave him a partner to stand with him through the ups and downs of life.

From "God Gave Me You"

God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I’ve lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you
