The Review
The meaning of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, but there is a lot of work that goes into celebrating with family and friends. There's the shopping, the extra cooking, the baking, the cleaning, the decorating ... so you can probably understand why I can easily say that I'm not ready for the holidays! That was why I didn't listen to A NehoSoul Christmas immediately. Now I wish I hadn't put it off. Bryan Duncan and the NehoSoul Band put together one seriously smooth CD.Phil Curry (keyboards) produces and does an excellent job of it. He knows Bryan and the rest of the band well and brings out the best in all of them. The sound is smooth as glass with a touch of funk.
Classics like Silent Night and Oh Holy Night get new life and have that touch of Bohemian that brings to mind a cartoon I once saw with the cool cat main character sitting in a club, listening to music, snapping his fingers, saying, "Dig that sound man." Winter Wonderland, one of my favorite holiday classics, has a touch of jazz and Song of Salomon does an outstanding job with background vocals.
Bryan Duncan is truly in his element here and that fact shines through every song.
