It's no surprise when you hear the name Rebecca St. James related to music or books. After all, the Dove Award and GRAMMY Award winning artist has seen 15 albums release in her 20+ year career and she's penned 11 books. For Christmas this year, she has combined her love of the two forms of art on The Friendly Beasts: an old English Christmas carol (Buy Direct). The picture book is beautifully illustrated by Anna Vojtech and the companion CD find St. James narrating the story and singing "The Friendly Beasts," "Shine Your Glory Down," and "Rebecca's Christmas Memories."
In The Friendly Beasts: an old English Christmas carol, the story of Jesus' birth is told from the perspective of five animals – a cow, a sheep, a camel, a donkey and a dove - and how each creature contributed to the nativity event by bringing gifts from their hearts to the baby Jesus.
In a press release, Rebecca talked about her hopes for the book. "I really hope kids who listen to this song and read this book can picture and understand what was happening around Jesus when he was born. It's such a beautiful scene with Mary, Joseph and the animals surrounding Jesus, celebrating him. Along with the illustrations, I think the song, the words, and the book really give you that visual picture of what it was like when Jesus was born. It's a very beautiful, very heartwarming sight."
