If you like Christian Pop Punk Band Hawk Nelson, You Should Check Out....

These other great bands

By Kim Jones, About.com

Since 2004, pop/punk music lovers have fallen in love with Hawk Nelson, helping the quartet sell nearly half a million albums, appear in several major television and motion picture projects, and gain high-profile song placement ("Bring 'Em Out") with NBC's NFL Sunday Night Football campaign.

In other words, these guys rock! But they're not the only ones with that great pop/punk sound that can be found in Christian music today.

1. Eleventyseven

Eleventyseven members Matt Langston (vocals, guitar), Caleb Satterfield (bass), and Jonathan Stephens (drums) started playing shows during high school at clubs in their hometown. It took several years, but once they got the attention of Flicker Records, the rest, as they say, is history.

2. Everyday Sunday

Everyday Sunday members Trey Pearson (vocals), Dan Hunter, Andrew Martin and Chris Hines came together at the Cypress Wesleyan Church in Columbus, Ohio as the house youth band. After a successful indie release, they were signed by Flicker Records in 2002.

Since then, there have been many changes. A new line-up has Trey now sharing the stage with Tyler Craft (bass), Kevin Cramblet (drums) and Nick Spencer (guitar) and since 2007, the band calls Inpop Records home, but the great sound is still the same.

3. Flatfoot 56

Comprised of brothers Tobin, Justin and Kyle Bawinkel (respectively frontman, drummer and bassist) along with multi-instrumentalist Josh Robieson, Flatfoot 56 tackles dark subject matter in their music -- issues like avarice, cowardice and faithlessness -- with a seriousness well beyond their years.

4. Kids in the Way

Until they seemed to disappear earlier in 2008, Kids in the Way represented a new generation of artists whose desire was to re-establish the integrity of rock. Initially formed by vocalist David Pelsue, guitarist Nathan Ehman and drummer Eric Carter in '97, the band had a different name and focus. With the addition of Austin Cobb and bassist Nathan Hughes, who has since left the group, Kids in the Way was born.

5. MxPx

MxPxTooth & Nail
It all started when three 15 year-old kids calling themselves Magnified Plaid and playing pop-punk music formed a band on July 6, 1992, in Bremerton, Washington. They didn't like their name so they abbreviated to it to M.P., but in drummer Yuri Ruley's handwriting, periods looked like "X"'s, and since he made up the show posters for the band, M.P. became MxPx.

Tooth & Nail Records checked the band out when MxPx played a "showcase" for the label in 1993 in vocalist Mike Herrera's parents' back yard. They were signed and their first major album, Pokinatcha, was released in 1994 while the band was still in high school.

6. Olivia the Band

Reed Cromwell (vox, bass), Gabe Watts (guitar), Justin Abilla (lead guitar) and Christian Perreira (drums) all grew up together in Oahu, HI. During high school, they spent a lot of time surfing and going to concerts. It was after one of those concerts in 1995 that they decided to form a band of their own.

After graduation, they moved to San Diego to pursue their musical dreams and found themselves playing in front of sold-out crowds. Before long, Essential Records signed them to a record deal and their freshman release hit stores in January 2005.

7. Relient K

In 2000, Relient K came out with their self-titled Gotee Records debut, and even though it earned the group a Billboard Video Music Award nomination, it wasn't the album that moved the band from locally known to nationally known. Their 2001 follow-up, The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek, was the group's breakthrough -- it turned Relient K into a club headliner instead of an opening act.

8. Stellar Kart

Stellar Kart - 2008Word
Adam Agee (vox), Jordan Messer (drums) and Cody Pellerin (guitar) started playing music in a youth group in Arizona. Adam and Jordan led worship, with former bass player Tay joining them on weekends. Cody joined them prior to being signed and Brian Calcara (bass), replaced Tay after their debut release.

The band does over 100 shows a year, taking their jobs of ministering to youth very seriously. These guys are the real deal from beginning to end.
