Once back in Detroit, J signed with a local Christian label and released two albums which weren't very successful. He met Paul Allen and Walter Kearney, and the three began working together as a production team called PAJAM. Moss spent the mid-90s touring with the Clark Sisters, and was signed, along with Karen Clark-Sheard, to Island Records in 1996 to record a solo album. While his album didn't get much acclaim, Clark's album, which was produced in part by PAJAM, was a hit and the Gospel world stood up and took notice of PAJAM.
Over the next seven years, the PAJAM team became the hitmakers of Gospel music and Moss became successful beyond his wildest dreams. But his desire to perform never quite went away, and in 2003 he and Paul Allen began writing songs for what would become The J Moss Project, which was released in September 2004 on Gospo Centric Records.
